STEELERS AVOID TRADITIONAL 3rd PERIOD COLLAPSE TO NOTCH WIN!

Coach Durigon boldly guaranteed a win prior to the Steelers encounter with the Fat Boys. How could Durigon do such a thing considering the Steelers record thus far? Well a number of factors were considered. First, the Steelers were coming off their best offensive performance of the year in their 6 all tie with the first place Alumina team. Also, Durigon played in net on the weekend and finally tasted victory allowing only one goal (rumor has it that he faced more than one shot too). The kicker came when it was announced that K-Man would not be in the line-up. Although K-Man has been racking up the points this season, the team does tend to go on unexplainable winning streaks when K-Man is not in the line-up. Thus, maybe not so bold a prediction after all. Now to the game.

It was a tight game with numerous scoring chances at both ends, but the Fat Boys struck first when early in the first period #19 burst through the Steeler defence and by a stunned Durigon - there went the shut out and the team pizza and beer. The Steelers tied it up in the first after Jeff Garner tipped in a Larry Romanuik blast from the point for his first of two. Good play dominated the second period but failed to produce a goal - however it did produce a string of comments from Romanuik who was overhead saying 'How the F… did he miss that', with respect to an outlet pass Larry fired onto (and past) the stick of fellow rear guard, Coach Lindsay. You see, Coach Lindsay had a few too many during the day as he participated in the annual work X-Mas curling bonspiel that started at noon. It was amazing enough to see Coach Lindsay skate around let alone take a pass. The third period was the most entertaining from a scoring perspective. First the Steelers jumped out to a 3-1 lead after goals from Gualter 'Carvalito' Carvahlo and Jeff Garner. The Fat Boys got one back mid-way through the third and tied it up after a scramble in front of Durigon with just over a minute to play. Just when you thought the Steelers would fold up and let another 2 points slip away, the boys came back hard and Mike Didulka buried one on a break away from a nice feed from Carvahlo. Justin Warkentin added the empty netter to ice the victory.

Several Steelers had a multiple point night including:

  • Carvahlo 1 G 3 A
  • Garner 2 G 1 A
  • Didulka 1 G 2 A (although I think the first assist should have gone to Romanuik - official scorer is still looking that over)
  • Warkentin 1 G 1 A

Post-game festivities were sponsored by Coach Lindsay who bought the Steelers multiple rounds of Steeler ale and a team pitcher of Stella in the bar! Thanks Coach!

Lineup Scratches: Neild (health scratch); Jones (computer virus); Kulbak (we're not quite sure)

First Penalty: Larry Romanuik (however, since Marco Jones missed this game and had room key duties for taking the first penalty last game, Jones has Room Key duties this week)

As we roll in a new year, we'll be introducing some new initiatives into the 2nd half of the season and playoffs:

  • At some point we will wear the 'white' jerseys - we'll just need to figure out when
  • Any player not notifying Coach Lindsay or Coach Durigon of their absence from a game in advance of that game will be contributing $10 to the beer fund (got to pay for those jerseys somehow) - Kulbak got lucky this past week as the rule does not come into effect until 2007
  • Any player taking a penalty which leads to a power play goal will be contributing $5 to the beer fund; if the goal is the game winning goal the player will contribute $10 to the beer fund (more commonly known as the 'Romanuik and Jones' rule)
  • Any player deflecting a shot into our own net will be contributing $5 to the beer fund (more commonly known as the 'Mark Lee' rule)
  • Any goalie allowing a goal within the last 2 minutes of the game or in overtime (not including shootouts or empty net goals) will be contributing $5 per goal to the beer fund (more commonly known as the 'Durigon' rule).

Any other creative suggestions are welcome.

The Steelers' next game is on Tuesday January 2nd at 8:30pm vs Team Grey. Please let me and Craig know if you can't make it. Also, if you look at the schedule, you will note we have a rematch against 'Hells' Satans', who may have been demoted to E Division. That will be a fun one!

Thanks - and by the way, hope you all had a wonderful holiday (Chanukah, Christmas, Festivus, whatever the case may be) and Happy New Year! Steelers WIN Big !!!! Steelers 23, Bengals 17 OT ! Steelers 23, Bengals 17, OT

STEELERS TIE ONE ON

All things considered, this was a pretty solid effort against the division leading Alumina squad, a team that is now sporting a 9-2-1 record. Both teams threw the book away when it came to tight checking defensive hockey and that made for a pretty entertaining game (even from a fans perspective).

The Steelers welcomed Justin Warkentin back to the line up and that certainly seemed to boost the offence as J-Man accounted for 2 goals and added an assist. K-Man continued his impressive play (I can't believe I'm typing this) with his own two goal and one assist performance (web-site shows only one goal, but that's being changed [sorry Larry]). Mike Didulka also scored one (and could have iced it in the third if he wouldn't have rang one off the post on a break away - oh well - can't get down on the team's leading scorer too much). Marco Jones also scored on a beautiful break away after stepping out of the penalty box, a familiar spot for the tough defenseman (also earned him room key duties for next game).

With a Steelers holding a 6-4 lead late in the third, the spirit of the Maple Leafs seemed to take over and there went another 3rd period lead.

Overtime solved nothing.

Great game though boys!

Game scratches included:

  • Carvahlo (watched the Leafs actually win one); Lindsay (took in the Rangers game in New York); Ruben (sleeping)

Next Game - Tuesday, December 19 at 10:30 vs. The Fat Boys

STEELERS NEVER IN IT AS TEAM GREY WINS 5-2

Durigon was in fine form as he stopped just about everything Team Grey shot his way (except for the 3 dribblers that went past him on the 3rd or 4th rebound - gotta work on that).

This isn't your typical write up as I'm late and gotta go…so in short, we lost another. Gualter Carvalho (or Carvalito as the web-site stats show) certainly didn't show any signs of jet lag as he was shuttled in for the game from the airport by Anthony 'birthday boy' Lam after returning from a business trip in the Caribbean (NICE!). Gualter potted the only two goals the Steelers could muster - both assisted by Jeff Garner (and wait for it…..) Kevin Neild (Gualter must have put in a rebound or something…).

Game Scratches:

Warkentin - school thing
Jones - pre-school thing (new baby…you know!)
Ruben - sleeping

Next Game: Tuesday, Dec 9, 2007 7:15 vs Alumina

Known Scratches: Carvalito, Coach Lindsay

Room Key Duties: Romaniuk (who else?)

Let me know if you can't make it.

Thanks

New Look Steelers

The Steelers had a new look line up on Tuesday as they took to the ice against The Fat Boys. The last time these two teams played the Steelers blew a 5 goal lead in the 3rd period. Nothing like that happened this time around.

Coach Lindsay brought out former QMJHL standout goaltender Marc Andre (Fluery???) and number one goalie Durigon took the pads off to join the forwards up front on a night that the team was a bit light on the bench.

The Steelers started quickly with a good scoring chance coming from none other than coach Lindsay who was sent in on a break away by Mike Didulka in the very first minute. Lindsay's shot just went off the goalie's trapper and trickled wide. It turned out to be the Steelers best chance of the period. The Fat Boys opened the scoring in the first on a bit of a scramble in front of goaltender Marc Andre. The Steelers tied it early in the 2nd as Mike Didulka notched one from Kevin Neild and Lindsay. The Fat Boys got that one back just before the 2nd period was over. It stayed that way throughout the third, a period that saw the Steelers kill off 3 consecutive penalties and a period that saw K-Man (Kevin for those who don't know) skate around like a race-horse (with blinders unable to see peripherally his wide open team mates), until with only 46 seconds left, Durigon took a nifty feed from Larry Romanuik who hustled in behind the Fat Boys net and stole the puck and Durigon buried it in Pavel Datsyuk-like fashion for his first of the year. Mark Lee also drew an assist on the tying goal.

Overtime solved nothing (other than some confusion about what happens in OT when a guy comes out of the penalty box - I won't get into that).

Final Score Steelers 2 Fat Boys 2
