STEELERS STARVE THE FAT BOYS

Coming off last week's disappointing 5-2 loss against Alumina, the Steelers had something to prove and to shoot for against the Fat Boys. A win against the Fat Boys would vault the Steelers into 3rd place so the team was pumped to get 'er done. The Steelers were missing a couple of regulars on D (Kulbak and Jones) and Garner up front heading into this contest. Justin Warkentin moved back to play D and looked very comfortable out there. The Fat Boys started quickly pressuring the Steelers for the first few minutes of the game until the 3 minute mark of the first period when Kevin Neild began his end to end rush. K-Man's strides could be overheard in the Thristy Penguin bar and crowds began to gather as K-Man began his journey from one end to the other. At the 5 minute mark of the first K-Man reached the red line and then turned on the speed. By the 6 minute mark…and a few line changes later, K-Man had maneuvered his way into the opposing end. To his credit, K-Man kept the puck away from every Fat Boy that tried to take it off him. K-Man finally made it close to the opposing goal and very cleverly faked the shot and instead fed Ryan McGonigle who slammed home his third of the year. It stayed that way until the 7 minute mark of the 2nd period when Fat Boy David Fox beat a some-what screened Durigon top shelf just inside the post/cross-bar. The Steelers got that one back on the powerplay with only 8 seconds left in the second period when Gualter Carvahlo directed in a Justin Warkentin feed for his 7th of the year. Larry Romanuik also picked up a helper on that one. The Steelers then displayed their Steel Curtain defence in the 3rd with some stand up defence and great shot blocking from Romanuik, Ruben, Lam and Lee to help preserve the 2-1 win. Great effort by all.
