The start of the 2007 portion of the winter season proved to be a strange one for the Steelers. Even before the Steelers hit the ice against Team Grey, strange things were happening - Larry Romaniuk unveiled his brand new shiny red one piece composite stick all wrapped in matching red tape (light red tape as some players pointed out); Ryan McGonigle was set to dawn the shin pads when he noticed one was missing and all of a sudden became a late scratch; and Durigon, somewhat distracted by McGonigle's missing shin pad, forgot to put his suspenders on (not quite sure how the pants stayed up).
The scoring started quickly when Larry Romaniuk who was playing D niftily jumped deep into the offensive zone and zipped one home to put the Steelers up quickly 1-0. After that Team Grey started shooting and missing Durigon completely, unfortunately the hit the net - in fact, scoring 5 times in 5 minutes of the first period to put the Steelers in a deep hole. However, with 2 periods to go, the Steelers knew there was a lot of time left and really started to take the play to Team Grey. First, while killing a Marco Jones penalty, Mike Didulka intercepted and Team Grey pass and broke in all alone and slammed in his first of 3 on the night. Less than three minutes later Craig Lindsay finished off a fine three way play with his 2nd of the season to bring the Steelers within 2. Didulka scored his 2nd of the night just over a minute later on another breakaway to bring the Steelers to within one. The Steelers didn't stop the momentum when they switched ends and headed into the third. Gualter Carvahlo was sent in on yet another breakaway on a beautiful pass from Mark Lee and Carvahlo finished it off like a pro going top shelf sending the water bottle right off the net - quite likely the best goal of the year so far. Team Grey then took back the lead on an unimpressive 2 on 1 play that resulted in another shot eluding Durigon. However, the Steelers showed a lot of resilience and did not let that goal faze them, in fact Durigon drew upon his pee wee coach's advice "Mario, no matter how bad it looks after you've let in 6, never let in the 7th since it most often is the most important goal of the game" and Durigon shut the door from there on in. With just under 4 minutes remaining Team Grey goon Mark Matusiak picked up a double minor for hooking and tripping and a 5 minute match penalty for harassing the official. Early into the power play Kevin Neild tied things up with his 6th of the season. The Steelers completed the comeback in overtime as Mike Didulka scored his third of the game going top corner off a lovely feed from Justin Warkentin.
The win put the Steelers within 1 point of 2nd place and continued the team's unbeaten streak to 3 games.
Multiple point earners included:
- Mike Didulka 4 points (3 G 1 A)
- Larry Romaniuk 2 points (1 G 1 A)
- Justin Warkentin 2 points (1 G 1 A)
Team Scratches: McGonigle (the case of the disappearing shin pad); Ruben (gig)
Team Fines: Kulbak - $5 to the beer fund (Mark Lee rule - deflecting shot into own net)
The team also came up with some further creative fines:
- Team recommended rule was 'any goalie allowing in 5 goals within 1 period will contribute $5 to the beer fund. Durigon reduced the number to 3 goals, so the official rule will be 'Any goalie allowing 3 goals within 1 period will contribute $5 to the beer fund' (more commonly known as the Durigon 2 rule)
- Any player forgetting a critical piece of equipment will contribute $5 to the beer fund (more commonly known as the McGonigle rule)
- Any player using stick tape that matches the colour of their stick where the tape colour is not black or white will contribute $25 to the beer fund (unless they end up scoring during the game). (more commonly known as the Romanuik 2 rule)
