The Steelers got back to shooting the puck

Etobicoke, ON (AP)—The Steelers got back to shooting the puck with a little less caution, and somehow, one shot wound up finding its way past the other teams net minder.

Then came another goal, followed by another. Just like that, their dominance of the "E" was clear.

Kman had two wicked goals and the Steelers pulled away to snap a terrible slide in D2, routing the listless Team Grey 5-0 on Tuesday night.

“Whenever you’re in a slide as a team, you want to go back to doing the little things. That’s throwing pucks at the net and crashing the net,” defenseman Larry said. “We needed to get some goals. It came easy for us at the beginning of the year, and in this slide, sometimes the bounces don’t go your way. We threw pucks at the net and fortunately we got some goals tonight. We were rewarded.”

McCartney scored a critical goal in the second period with help from Crazy Nolan. As well Didulka potted 2 goals with help from Rubin and McCartney, and Crazy Nolan and Larry.

“I don’t think we ever pushed the panic button,” Steelers forward Lam said. “I just know we had to be desperate out there tonight. We’re back on the winning track.”

Nick stopped 22 shots, including all 18 he faced in the final two periods, while improving to 4-2-2 in his last 10 games for the Steelers.

“We were ready to finish them off with a solid third period,” Durigon said.

The Steelers turned this one into a laugher with a third-period flurry that started when Kman wrap-around beating the fat goalie, making it 4-0 with 8:48 remaining. Didulka roofed in a Crazy Nolan pass less that 2 min later. “Tonight was the night—all I needed was no goalie,” Didulka quipped.

“At home, for whatever reason, we haven’t played very well,” Stephenson #11- from Team Grey said. “It is embarrassing. It’s frustrating to have your fans boo you when you leave the ice—not that it’s not warranted. Certainly frustrating and a little bit humiliating.”
Tonnes of Wings and buds were had with the $250 team credit !
Scoring Summary:
Kman 2G
Didulka - 2G, 1A
McCartney 1G, 1A
Crazy,Chayim, 2A
Larry 1A
Nick 22 saves
Notes

The Steelers played without D Olesh , who sprained his left nut two days earlier ice fishing up north, and both Lindsay and Garner missed the team bus. D Mark Lee was called up from Higlanders (AHL) to replace Olesh.

STEELERS SUCK IN E

Three guys on the bench didn't make it any easier on the Steelers as the squad faced the Knights who dressed a full compliment of players…like 36 or so. The Steelers faced an early deficit after going down 2 goals in the first scored on the Knights' 4 minute powerplay. The Steelers drew within one before the period was out courtesy of Mr Didulka who notched his 10th of the season. That was about it for the Steelers as they managed to keep it close until the third period where the Knights broke it open with 4 goals and dealt the Steelers a 7-2 lead.

Scoring Summary

Didulka G 1 (10) A 1 (11)
McCartney G 1 (6) A 0
Rubin G 0 A 1 (3)
Carvalho G 0 A 1 (5)
Durigon G 0 A 1 (6)

Next Game - Tuesday, Feb 3 at 8:30pm vs St. Louis (2-13-1-1)

Let me know if you are out next week: So far confirmed out - Carvalho

Also, we need to make sure everyone has enough games for the playoffs:

Olesh - need 3 more games

HAVEN'T HEARD FROM - Nolan, Neild, Garner, Romanuik, Serdan, Olesh

Regardless, we'll need 5-6 more guys for sure, so if you know anyone, see if they want to play and let me know.

Kman Predicts his timely return would save the team from further losses – ESPN

4 February 2009

02:36

ESPN - AP Newswire

Etobicoke (AP Newswire) - In a bold statement to the press during yesterdays morning practice, Kman predicted a guaranteed win with his return in the line-up. Coach Durigon although hearing the bold prediction still proceeded to make made several call ups from the minors to fill the bench with enough skaters to field at least 2 lines. "if Kman can get off his fat-ass and skate a bit I wouldn't have to fill the bench with 3 lines, until he (and the team), demonstrate they have the capability to produce results - I'm staying with this approach."

The game started slowly as the Steelers adjusted the lineups and made room for everyone on the bench. No scoring in the first period - the only excitement was from "Crazy" Nolan's Penalty - which was a "round of beers for the boys"!

The St. Louis (North-wtf?), got on the board early in the second with a blue line blast on a 2-2 break in which Nick couldn't quite squeeze between the pads. The next shift Steelers tied the game with a great McCartney break-in with steady hands and patience around the net, he fired a centering a pass in the slot to the skates of Kman, who masterfully kicked the puck to his stick and buried the puck in the twine.

With the fans screaming "Kman, Kman,.....!" the next line stepped out and the big "O" scored not once, but twice (the score sheet says, M. Lee got one - you were robbed!) with brilliant efforts by Durigon - assisting on the first and with Didulka. The second goal the big "O" was aided once again by the play maker Didulka and "Crazy" Nolan assisting.

Lot's of opportunities were had by all during the night and the defense wrestled with a bouncing puck.. especially the far blue line where both Durigon and Chayim witnessed a wicked hop over their sticks. With 10 min into the 2nd Kman put the "nail in the coffin" of the Saints, by stealing the puck from a crappy defender and burying the puck with a text book wrap-around goal.

No scoring in the 3rd, as Coach Durigon - switched the team strategy to play the Trap. McCartney managed to hold one of the opponents for a 2min break in the box.

Nick had a great game with 22 saves on 23shots = 95.65% SV%.

Healthy-scratch Lindsay - showed up just as the free beer was being handed out - great timing.!!

Post game activities included "Crazy" being a little tooooooo comfortable in his birthday suit in the team locker-room, and the usually ruckus in the thirsty penguin.

Great game by all -
